When Should I Pick Up A VPS?

Alright, I’ll admit that this is starting to get a little bit repetitive. I just can’t seem to rid the idea of picking up a VPS out of my mind. At the moment I’d say that all of my sites put together use about 5GB a month, which isn’t that much really. I’m just wondering – is it better to push my shared hosting accounts to the brink of their usage limits or transfer all of my sites across to the VPS to avoid any downtime?
The lack of shell access on Hostgator is becoming a serious issue especially now that I’m using Cake PHP. I mean I could Bake all of the files locally and then upload them but it kinda defeats the purpose of the application.
I’ve been checking out servint.com based on a number of recommendations and they seem to be extremely reliable. I’m really close to signing up here but I’m afraid that I’ll be wasting my money. Should I go all out and acquire a high end VPS account or even a dedicated server to show that I’m serious about this? I honestly don’t know.
All that I know is that my money is burning holes in my pocket. I never was very good at managing cash.

hey found your site in the DP forums. We do similar things.
Either way i am working on a video streaming website and i require root access to install a bunch of plugins for flash player. The shared host who has all of these plugins recommended by the application developer is really slow. Godaddy and lunarpages and other i have hosting with do not allow root access. So i know i definitely need a VPS but cannot afford to spend a lot or prepay for an entire year to see any significant savings. I have come to the conclusion im going with dotstert. starting at 34.95 a month without yearly commitment and i think about $45 extra for plesk.

Ah cool, good to see another person in the same boat.
I’ve got this horrible feeling in my stomach that I’m going to buy a dedicated server…………………….now that would be stupid.
That’s not a bad price. I’m not familiar with plesk, I assume it’s similar to Cpanel? I must give it a go sometime.
