Have I Really Spent THIS much on domains at Dynadot?
by Matt on , under Domaining, My Earnings
$522.30! I can’t believe it!
The best bit about it is that I can now register .com’s for $6.99 a year which is pretty cool.
Good news on the earnings side of things, I’m gradually recovering to my pre-January levels on Adsense, about $6 a day. I want to be closer to $60. I’ve no time scale penned out for it at the minute, I’m too busy concentrating on developing websites now. The earnings will follow natually if I keep penning original content.
I’m definitely thinking of moving to the mainland in May 2008. I’ll have to figure out how much I’ll need long before then though. $60 a day is the equivalent of my current wage which would be enough to survive but I don’t want to be scraping by.
I’m looking to buy a decent budget tool to track my finances. Has anyone any experience with the Accountz programs? I’ve seen some mixed reviews over on Amazon.
It’ll be helpful to seperate my personal and business accounts. Too often I’ve spent £40 on a night out and thought “Shit, I could have bought 8 domains with that!”. Similarly I’ve registered 8 domains in the past and thought “Shit, I’ll have to stick to dingy cider tonight!”.
Another update, I’ve had a great idea for a network of websites! The first of which will be wehatecats.com which is currently in development. It follows on from what I was saying yesterday on how I find it easier to develop pisstake/fun websites. My plan is to generate and reinvest the revenue from these sites into serious ventures.

Like the domain name
I can see the cat lovers flocking to the domain to complain already…

To keep track of your business spending go grab Accounting Express 2007, it’s a free download and should be enough to do what you need: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=40589aa4-f8b0-440c-b31c-064a09f8e986&displaylang=en

That’s quite a sum of money for domains, so far I’ve been very cheap, using only 2 of my domains, and I own 7 I think… probably not the best way to handle business, but it works for now. But pretty impressive on your part.

One more thought, monetize your blog… just a suggestion… try to make something from all of your sites, however minute it may seem. At least that’s my advice, it’s your site. But it seems like a lot of people would try to help you make money by clicking links since you are actually taking the time to tell everyone how you are making the money. But I could be wrong. We’ll see if my blog out performs the rest of my sites. Shouldn’t be hard though at this point.

Hate to double comment on one post, but I just thought about what you said about seperating your finances, I don’t know if this will help, but I’m lazy when it comes to doing my paperwork, so I generally let the bank and paypal take care of tracking my finances, which probably isn’t the smartest thing to do in some cases, but nevertheless it works for me. But the way I do it, is I set up a paypal business account, if you have a personal paypal account you can upgrade, and if you catch it in time they are giving away security keys, you can read about that on the site. It’s an extra layer of protection for your finances.
Any money that I can recieve through paypal, I choose that option. If I can’t then I deposit the check into my checking account, and transfer the same amount to my paypal, so that all of my money is transfered into the same account. The best part about the paypal account, is that they consistently have been paying over 5% interest, compared to about 2% with my checking and savings. Even with a CD I have to have about $10,000 to get the same return. And since my domain registrar takes paypal it makes it very simple to transfer funds, and if they don’t you can always get a paypal debit card. The card also gives you 1% cash back on most purchases.
I know this isn’t quite what you were asking for, but maybe it’ll help you out.

Thanks for all the great advice there Byron!
You’re welcome to double post more often if it’s gonna be that useful. Very interesting to hear that about Paypal!
