Update : I might just be addicted to buying names. Ach well.
Num Sum Fun – Keywords and Domain Names
I’m currently drawing up a list of domain names that I’m interested in with the fantastic online spreadsheet tool Num Sum. It means I can update the list anywhere instead of managing 3 or 4 seperate lists at a time.
I’m trying to come up with an accurate way to appraise each name I come across. The method I’m using is quite simple, I’m simply searching to see how many results a keyword phrase/domain name Google Search produces and I’m dividing that by the Overture Keyword Selector Tally
It’s probably not the most accurate means of appraisal out there but at least it’s quick! Particularly when you need to search through a large number of names in a short period of time. I prefer the Overture tool over the Google Sandbox simply because it provides figures rather than a vague description like “Average Search Volume”. What on earth is an Average Search Volume??? Average for whom?
At least I’ve calmed down from earlier. God the whole Ubuntu affair is depressing.
And on a lighter note – a cool new feature in Opera 9
This is seriously cool! In Opera 9 you can make changes to a pages source code, click on the Reload from Cache button in the toolbar and your modifications are displayed from the local cache.
I can imagine this being extremely helpful when you are trying to find out just how a design is put together!
A great tool for developers of all levels.
Jesus I still can’t get my network card to work!
I think I’m starting to hate Linux. Why the hell do you have to spend so long trying to get one small component to work? It’s really getting on my nerves and I’m almost beginning to regret installing it in the first place. Ubuntu doesn’t seem to have half of the necessary components built into it. And when I go to install them from the package manager the download obviously fails because I have no connection.
It’s a pity because the operating system looks good, it just doesn’t work for me. I’ve spent 8 hours seemingly on a fools earn and it isn’t worth the effort. I don’t seem to be getting any closer to fixing it. I might try another distrubtion if I can’t get it working by the end of the week. At least Mandriva ran out of the box.
I’m exhausted. I was up until 2am last night. For nothing. I am not a happy bunny.
I need a Flash drive
Transferring files across from my laptop to the Linux desktop is painfully slow at the moment and I think it might be a good idea to invest in one of those USB Flash drives to speed things up a little.
At the moment I’m sending files across by CD-R. I am writing the desired files to disc using XP’s inbuilt CD burning facility. It’s really annoying.
Progress with Ubuntu is slow. I spent last night trying to install drivers for my wi-fi card and it was like trying to get a cat to take a bath. If I didn’t have two computers I’d have probably erased the Ubuntu installation by now as it was really getting on my nerves. Now I have 20 minutes this morning before work to try to fix it. I don’t want to have to come home with the same problem otherwise I might just scream.
Welcome to the world of Ubuntu?

The Ubuntu ISO burn-off proved to be successful this time. My CD-RW drive in work must be faulty or something as it wouldn’t even recognise the blank CD-R yet it burnt perfectly on my colleagues machine!
Installation went swimmingly. At first I was a little confused by the way you have to load up the Live CD and then click on the Install icon through the desktop but once I found it that was it!
I decided to re-format my Hard Drive and put Ubuntu on a partition of it’s own. I’m going to use this machine as my Linux box alone and maybe purchase a gaming desktop later on in the year. Or I might just buy a Playstation 3 or an X-box 360. God I hate having to buy a new graphics card every year.
Hmmmm, this is strange, I haven’t been asked to specify a root password. Is this normal? With Mandriva and Red Hat you had to set one during the installation process. Odd.
Right installation is now complete and I’m going to update this with every problem I encounter that way I (and hopefully others) won’t be encountering the same errors for days on end with the familar confused and bemused look. Wish me luck everyone. I will need it.
Variable domain name prices?
There is some speculation circulating around the Interweb that ICANN is considering implementing a system to price domains individually based upon their market value. This seems unfeasible. Could ICANN trust an automated system to accurately price domain names? Moreover, do they have the manpower to do this manually?
To me it seems completely pointless. Everyone will be creating 1000 sub domain names if this system is introduced. It’s bound to curb the expression of individuality on the WWW too, with domain names being such an integral part of a webmasters online identity.
I don’t honestly know what they are thinking about. Reintroduce free domains immediately! Actually don’t…….you’d have people running scripts for days on end registering every single combination available.
Ubuntu Buffer Underrun Drama In Nero
by Matt on , under Ramblings, Technology
I downloaded and burnt the Ubuntu ISO this afternoon and the damn thing failed at 100%! Only had one CD with me at the time which made it all the more annoying. I tried running it anyway and the opening screen appeared which gave me false hope that it would work but it crashed out if I clicked on any of the menu options with an “Error Reading Boot CD” message.
Ach well, I’ll just reburn it tomorrow. Wanted to spend tonight installing it and now I have little else to do.
Since it seems to be one of my favourite topics of late, I might as well provide another update on the Namedrive campaign. There have been no more clicks since I last updated but I’ve noticed that my earnings have increased! I think the figures they first publish are just estimates and they must update it when they have more information. Or something! I’ve made back 10% on largetesticles.net after having it up for under a month! If the pace keeps up I should break even at the very least.
Another!! quick update on Namedrive
by Matt on , under My Earnings
It seems as though one of my domain names in particular is actually going to be profitable through the parking system. Overnight it’s received 2 more clickthroughs! In fact so far it’s the only one to receive any real attention. Let’s hope that the other names start picking up a little.
I think its about time I started adding categories into the blog to make it a little more manageable in future. I could do with editing the existing linklist too. The thing is at the moment I’m bookmarking any interesting links over on del.icio.us and it seems to be a bit unnecessary to replicate that here.
Who knows though, I’m sure there is a workaround.
Installing Eclipse killed my brain.
by Matt on , under Ramblings, Technology
Oh that was fun. I’m just after installing the Eclipse IDE after following a tutorial about it in PHParchitect. Must have taken me about 2 hours in total. It was tedious. Tedious beyond all belief! I’m not sure if I need even half of the features it boasts. I’ll look at it tomorrow. I’m watching Sheriff John Bunnell and generally just chilling at the moment. My brain needs to recover.
Today was quite productive all in all. I set up the Adwords campaign for the Rock Tshirts website, tidied up the Smarty template, linked together a few of my existing sites and learnt a little more about SOAP.
I’ve had plans for a while to make a Content Management System to help manage all of my sites and domains. I think I’ll leave the idea for my Major Project next year. Well it’s either the CMS or the Adopt A Chav site thats been on the shelf for the last few months………
Alrighty, back to the Sheriff mwahahah!
